2008-10-10 03:07:14Pets, some plants don't mix
It's officially high hurricane season and many of us are sleeping with one eye open and using it to watch the Weather Channel. The Humane Helper has covered the topic of preparing your pets for hurricanes pretty thoroughly: gather pets, photographic proof of evidence, food and water, toys, bedding, leashes, meds and crates well in advance. Sometimes, though, the hazards that hurricanes pose to pets may not be straightforward. One of the preparations many of us make when the wind starts to kick up is clearing our yards of loose objects, especially potted plants. Before you turn Fluffy and Fido's storm shelter into a veritable greenhouse, however, remember that many houseplants are dangerous for pets to consume. Some of the major culprits in pet poisonings are true lilies, English ivy, "peace lilies" spathiphyllum, and oleander, which is bad for just about everyone. Many other houseplants are not strictly poisonous, but can be very irritating to the digestive tract. Anxious pets are more likely to chew on elements in their environment than happy pets and there's no doubt that changes in the weather, the household and the behavior of stressed-out parents are all likely to produce anxiety in pets. So bring them indoors, but don't let your plants have the run of the house.
